Open History

The OUHS is a nationally based history society with over 200 members from the Orkneys to the Scilly Isles, from Ireland and Europe to the USA. To keep in touch with such a widely scattered membership the OUHS produces a journal, Open History, most of which is written by members. This gives a unique opportunity to all sorts of people, at all stages of academic study, to have their work published and read by sympathetically minded peers.

Open History is published in the spring, summer and autumn/winter of each year. An additional Special Conference edition, reproducing some of the papers read and presentations made at the Residential Weekend, enables all members to share in this event.

The Hon. Editor of Open History welcomes contributions from all members. For some it is their first foray into the world of publishing. Others are old hands in the local and specialist history society world. Some post-graduate students are inspired to follow up material encountered in their studies. Subjects range over a wide historical period. For example the Summer 2006 edition includes articles on Eighth Century Stone Crosses in northern Britain, the Nazi revolution and WWII, evacuee school teachers, Roderick Murchison and Russian Geology and Walking Races in Sussex.

An important part of the journal is devoted to new publication listings and book reviews. The editor will advise members who wish to review a recently published book on a subject within their area of interest and expertise.

Open History also includes snippets of historical and archaeological news from the wider media. There is also a calendar of events, exhibitions and news of other societies.

The journal is automatically posted to all members. Non members can obtain a copy at £5 per issue from the Editor, Jill Groves, 77 Marford Crescent, Sale, Cheshire, M33 4DN. grovesjill@ntlworld.com. There are also back copies available click here for a complete list.
