At Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, Orville Wright completes the first ever powered aeroplane flight, covering 120 feet in 12 seconds and reaching a height of 10 feet. The Wright Brothers completed three further flights that day, the last one covering 852 feet and lasting 57 seconds. [Source: North Carolina State Library]
